To drive a mouse insane you give it a button that sometimes produces a shock an other times produces food when pressed.   
As the world becomes more interconnected and therefore complex we will all be encountering more buttons that produce drastically different results for reasons that are increasingly difficult to understand.

Help yourself and the people around you combat insanity by being self aware and honest to reduce the number of unknowns clouding causal inferences.
